Breaking the habit
Breaking was my first encounter with art.
It’s 2024, the word Breaking has finally found its true name with the general public, long called breakdance by the media since its creation in the 70s, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games may have rebranded the art. In France, we dancers call it le break.
I’ve been a breaker since I was 16, I was very active with my old group, we trained 3 times a week, all our free time was devoted to breaking.
Since the arrival of Pangolin the first and the confinement of the world, I no longer dance, but I actively follow the movement and everything that goes on around it.
I was one of the people who was very resistant to the inclusion of Breaking in the Olympic Games. We talk about hiphop culture, but Breaking is a culture in its own right within hiphop culture.
The reality is that I was afraid that the movement I’d been following for over 20 years would be denigrated, afraid that it would be misrepresented… I followed the events, I was proud to have been able to see it at the Olympic Games.
I’d been wanting to take the plunge and paint breaking for some time.
It was about time.
