Buy art directly from the artist
Yeah, I've set up my own online store. Want to support an independent artist? Now's the time if you're looking for original art to decorate your home.
This blog post is going to be a little technical and talk less about art and more about code – yes, I’m also a web developer.
This is the first time I’ve launched this type of service, I’d already implemented some for clients, using all-in-one e-commerce solutions, Woocommerce and Prestashop. I found that in my case, if I used these tools, it was like using a tank to kill a fly, so I used snipcart, which is much lighter and lets you set up an online store very quickly with very little code, using Stripe for payments.
If you don’t know how to code, you can set up an online store with Shopify and that’s it, but I didn’t want an intermediary, it’s a choice, I want to be in control of my stock and I want people to stay on my site throughout the sales process.
The most complicated part is getting the word out about your store, marketing, I’m at the beginning of my strategy, as I said, Making art is great, showing it is hard, I’ve had to create my product catalogs for Pinterest, Facebook / instagram and google, and now it’s all starting, investing money in campaigns to get my works up in people’s feeds, I’m competing with big machines like Saatchi Art and Singulart, I could have put my works online on them.
The downside is that I’m directing all my energy and money into promoting their brands, not mine, and I’ll be directing all the traffic to their website, not mine.
I blog to get closer to my potential customers, so that they understand my practice, my vision, it takes time, and I feel that in the long run, it will pay off for me to have chosen the path of independence.
Enough talk, I’ve got photos and videos to take of my work, and in the meantime I’m not painting, but it’ll happen 🙂
In the meantime, buy art for your home.
