What is a bad work of art?
Sometimes you spend time on a painting, and when you've had a chance to think about it, you must be able to tell whether it's a good job or not.
Today I produced four works, all different, two portraits, a still life and one that could be described as a lifestyle painting, yes I’m inventing that term, after all, we are the artists.
Of these four works, there’s one that I’d call a bad work of art, and here it is:
Why do I think it’s a bad work of art? The problem, as I see it, is that the jaw of the person on the right is too low. It’s bad because, at this stage, you can’t say it’s a style because everything else in the painting is quite well proportioned. Everything would have had to be assumed in terms of deformation for me to be satisfied with the painting.
I have several solutions:
- Correct the jaw so that it’s homogeneous
- Hide the mouth
- Deform the baby’s head
I’ll work on the paint again tomorrow, but I’ll give myself the night to stop thinking about it.
